New World Order Employment Applications #008: CONNOR DWYER

11 04 2012

Introducing the next candidate to fill out SUGAR -N- THUNDER’s New World Order Employment ApplicationCONNOR DWYER!

Connor Dwyer is the cousin of SNT’s pal Mike Wilson. Clearly acting crazy on the internet runs in the blood. Like Mike and I, Connor acts, shoots and edits his original YouTube content – though he is usually busy pranking his brother, covering songs or posting challenges. He’s stepped up his production with a newly acquired green screen (they can be so fun… and tortuous) and is posting new videos with a mix of commentary on pop culture while showing off his skills.

Who I am & what I do:

I’m a YouTuber and aspiring filmmaker.

Projects you should know about:

The rest of Connor’s work can be found HERE!

The Survey:

1. What defines awesomeness to you? When you see/do/feel/experience/etc. something and it makes your jaw drop every time – that is true awesomeness.

2. Have you ever had a near-death experience? Yes, multiple times! I was hit by a car when I was 8. Luckily I only got a few scratches but then, due to being a skater my whole life, one time I got hung up on a high-ass rail. Whew, if my balls didn’t hit that rail my face would have been done for!

3. If you could be absolute ruler of the world for a day, what’s the first thing you’d do? I would make it absolute law that I was ruler of the world for the rest of my life so I could do whatever the fuck I want.

4. What’s your guilty pleasure? Oh boy, I would say walking around my house naked. A lot of people like it but I would do it all the time if I could.

5. What do you know now that you wish you knew as a teen/kid? But I am a teen/kid! Well if I had to answer I’d probably say knowing how to play 9+ instruments. I feel like that would’ve come in handy.

New World Order Employment Applications #007: WILLIAM RUBEN HELMS

3 01 2012

Introducing the next candidate to fill out SUGAR -N- THUNDER’s New World Order Employment Application: WILLIAM RUBEN HELMS!

Sometimes in life you encounter people equipped with the kind of raw dedication that pushes them to live, eat, breathe, and sleep what they love to do – they do it at all costs and at no half-measures. They work harder, stay out later, pump the music louder, and capture all the moments that others miss. When it comes to documenting music of all types in NYC and beyond with an intensity and literary flair all his own, William Ruben Helms is that person. This sharp and ever-personable Corona, Queens-based writer, photographer, and editor knows few limits when it comes to his craft (and having a debaucherous good time..!) and has published articles, reviews, and photos in myriad publications including New York Magazine‘s Vulture Blog, The New York Press, and WNYC’s Shots You’ve Shot blog. His claim to blogosphere fame almost two years ago was the founding of his own music and photography site – The Joy of Violent Movement, which has claimed readers in the UK, Germany, Israel, Canada, France, Japan and 24 other countries since its arrival on the ‘net.

Who I am & what I do:

I’m a music journalist, music blogger, photographer, freelance writer, troublemaker, soldier of love, unrepentant badass, and generally a master of several trades.

Projects you should know about:
My music and photography blog, The Joy of Violent Movement (also on Facebook).

Here’s some samples of his work [click to enlarge]:

The Survey:

1. What defines awesomeness to you? If you’re familiar with any literary criticism on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, almost every critic (and professor for that matter) will refer to Polonius as a fool, a buffoon, a windbag, a total fucking bore. They’ll tell you too that he’s a joke and that practically everything he says should be viewed with ridicule and suspicion but he offers some of the wisest and most difficult advice to his son Laertes: “To thine own self be true.” We modern folk view such a statement as a cliche – I mean you’ve probably heard someone say something along those lines at least 20 times a day. But if you really give it some thought, you’ll probably realize how difficult it really is to be yourself, to be that person that the Divine (or God, or the Infinite or whatever you prefer to call it) made you. Biologically speaking let’s put it this way, unless you’re someone’s identical twin, for you to come out exactly how you are is a one in about 70 trillion chance. In most cases, there will never be anyone exactly like you. If someone doesn’t or just can’t accept you for everything you’re about, it’s probably one of the worst personal insults of this life. And by far, the greatest and most unforgivable sin is for any individual to not be the only self that you’re supposed to be. Think about that when there are so many external pressures to conform, to blindly follow along, to be and do things that you’re not or don’t fucking care about. I think it takes a lot of courage to say (even if it’s mentally) “Fuck this! I need to be me and I need to be me at all costs.” So anyone authentically themselves are pretty awesome.

Dive bars are always awesome. In fact, I’m drawn to the lurid, the profane and the sleazy.

Getting up every day and realizing that you do something you love, is both lucky and awesome. I’ve had plenty of jobs that I’ve hated with every fiber of my being and I can tell you that there are far more people who do things that they loathe because someone pressured them into it or they need the money and can’t figure out what to do with their time.

A perfectly poured pint of Guinness and a Romeo Y Julieta cigar or two are awesome.

2. Have you ever had a near-death experience? Actually, I’ve had a couple. Back when I was in high school, I dated this very lovely young woman, who was my first love. When we split up, I took it badly – there were other things going on in my life, and it kind of felt like my entire life was falling apart at the seams. And of course, when you’re a teenager, you’re pretty melodramatic – everything is pretty much the end of the world. I fell into a deep, suicidal depression. One day, I decided that I was going to kill myself. I had felt weary and had enough. So I decided that I was going to throw myself in front of a car. It wasn’t a well thought out plan – I mean, it didn’t enter my mind that the driver being scared shitless may avoid trying to hit me, that maybe I’d miscalculate or misjudge something. Nor did it enter my mind that I might be scared or that I might want to continue living. In any case, I tried to jump out in front of this car and I guess there’s a part of me that (thankfully) hesitated and I narrowly missed getting hit by this car.

I’ve also nearly drowned a couple of times.

3. If you could be absolute ruler of the world for a day, what’s the first thing you’d do? I’d ban anyone from trying to sing Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston or Stevie Wonder while on American Idol or Glee. I’d eliminate student debt up to $40,000. And most importantly, I’d legalize weed and most other drugs, excluding crack and crystal meth, as well as gambling and prostitution.

4. What’s your guilty pleasure? I honestly have a lot of guilty pleasures – I happen to enjoy vices, lots and lots of vices. With that in mind we’ll talk about guilty pleasures, and they include: Guinness (by the tap and only by the tap), Romeo Y Julieta cigars, gambling, fast food, women, porn, The Maury Povich Show, Jerry Springer, dirty South rap, women, coveting others’ property, wives and girlfriends, photography, modernist and post-modernist literary fiction, books on theoretical physics, Buddhism, the New York Yankees, the New York Giants, the New York Rangers, dive bars (the sleazier, the better) and well – I’m quite proud of being a depraved person with tons of terrible habits.

5. What do you know now that you wish you knew as a teen/kid? That being an adult is really pretty fucking awesome, actually. Just having the ability to do what I want and to tell people to fuck off, is a great thing.

New World Order Employment Applications #004: CARLOS DETRES

28 10 2010

Introducing the next candidate to fill out SUGAR -N- THUNDER’s New World Order Employment ApplicationCARLOS DETRES!

Carlos Detres is a special kind of artist. Not content to be limited by the confines of taboo or popular opinion, Carlos gravitates towards the raw stuff: the haunting, unflinching representations of life in both photographic and literary form. The focus of his lens or choice of words all bear his own unique marker. There is something of the supernatural, something of the unknown, something of the underground authenticity of life that is all too often censored or hidden from view. The tales he tells are all the more meaningful because you know they are truly HIS, with nothing held back. He takes that extra step to get the photo from the mosh pit, experiment with ghostly forms, blur the real and unreal, impart the stories of nights spent in violent joie de vivre. Is Carlos Detres fearless? Perhaps. Only he can be the true judge of that. In viewing or reading his work, however, one can be sure he lives with that spirit of inquisitiveness that leads wandering souls to liberation – and many, many more adventures.

Who I am & what I do:

I’m a writer and photographer who does a lot of work for The Whiskey Dregs.

Projects you should know about:

The Whiskey Dregs: Online literary and arts magazine founded by Carlos, “dedicated to all of those bad things artists and writers tell you to do”

Portfolio: Carlos’ photos, writing, and contact info for freelance projects

Here’s some samples of his work [click to enlarge]:

The Survey:

1. What defines awesomeness to you? A good ol’ late night adrenalin rush when the city is quiet but I’m not.

2. Have you ever had a near-death experience? No but I once pretended to have one. I threw myself off a small cliff and fell a few feet below with my eyes closed, waiting to hear my sister cry. This was many years ago so I’m due for a new one.

3. If you could be absolute ruler of the world for a day, what’s the first thing you’d do? Hit the delete key on religion.

4. What’s your guilty pleasure? The movie Clueless – the one starring what’s-her-name who was in that Aerosmith video. I’ve seen it almost thirty times and own a copy of it. I haven’t seen it in years.

5. What do you know now that you wish you knew as a teen/kid? Take the pill and do that three-way with Vicky when you’re 20. Do it.

New World Order Employment Apps #003: CAROL QUIJADA

13 10 2010

Introducing the next candidate to fill out SUGAR -N- THUNDER’s New World Order Employment Application: CAROL QUIJADA!

Carol Quijada is truly “a girl in love with the world,” down for expressing herself in multiple mediums and making her mark through song, words, and pictures. This creative soul’s love for the arts is apparent in everything she does, and her good energy is infectious. Bright, warm, and passionate, she’ll grab your attention with her killer pipes and evocative photography. Carol sings with her whole heart, and halts the rush of time by striving to capture the moment at rock shows, public events, and portrait sessions.

Who I am & what I do:

I am Carol, just an average girl with a not so average amount of love for all art forms. Unfortunately, I haven’t been blessed with the talent to do all of them so I mostly focus on vocal music, writing, and photography. I love to listen to powerful vocalists (often women) and sing along with them. I started taking pictures to mostly remember time. I have a horrible sense of time! Eventually I began to take pictures of things that mattered to me. I love going to concerts for local bands because I can really capture a lot of energy and it makes me so happy to sit down with these images and spend some quality (editing) time with them :)

Projects you should know about:

Carol’s Industria: Blog & compilation of videos, music, and slideshows of photos

Facebook Page: If you meet me and I take your picture, it will land here :)

Here’s some samples of her work [click to enlarge photos]:

The Survey:

1. What defines awesomeness to you? Awesome is food. Or food is awesome :) I am answering these questions as I eat a delicious pizza topped with uncured pepperoni, Italian sausage, roasted red and green peppers, roasted purple onions and held together with Mozzarella Cheese. People come together with food, it’s a comfort thing. And it’s awesome to know that I live in a place where I can have about 20 different versions of bread. Of course, the most awesome bread is Hallulla (from Chile!).

2. Have you ever had a near-death experience? Oh man…. This is also my most embarrassing moment. I was nine when I thought I was okay with jumping off the grown-up diving board. I ended up at the bottom of the pool and it felt like the surface was way too far. I began to freak out underwater and the air was running out but lifeguards got to me as I got to the top. The embarrassing part is that I was wearing a bikini and (with the force of the water rushing past me) as I went down my top rode up and I didn’t notice until I got some air….

3. If you could be absolute ruler of the world for a day, what’s the first thing you’d do? I honestly have no clue…. Uhm… Make all the billionaires share the wealth? Make it a law that all people must go to school from pre-K to 4 years of College …. with funding from said billionaires. In a sense mean and unfair, but c’mon, do you really need 10 yachts?

4. What’s your guilty pleasure? OOOOH! I don’t feel too guilty but I do love the Kardashian shows. Both of them. :D

5. What do you know now that you wish you knew as a teen/kid? A little more confidence with my singing. I probably could have gotten more constructive feedback in high school if I wasn’t so shy.

New World Order Employment Apps #002: SEAN COLÓN

20 09 2010

Introducing the next candidate to fill out SUGAR -N- THUNDER’s New World Order Employment Application: SEAN COLÓN!

Sean is a straight-up, kicka$$ media maker. He’s an avid adventurer in the storied realms of photo and video with a penchant for horror and a serious knack for special effects. To put it simply, the man’s got an eye for all that is awesome. From capturing historic Green-Wood Cemetery in haunting tones, to faux-wounding his subjects with striking realism, to churning out energy-filled snaps from the front row of rock shows, Sean is definitely a visual artist to know and watch. As he adds to his tattoo collection, expands his portfolio, and experiments with new techniques, Sean’s diving headfirst down the rabbit hole and there’s no telling what he’ll find…

Who I am & what I do:

I am Sean Colón and I do Photo/Video/Special FX.

Projects you should know about:

Sean Colón Photography: collection of Sean’s photos on Flickr

Bad Wolf: blog about tattoos and the stories behind them (in progress!)

Here’s some samples of his work [click to enlarge]:

The Survey:

1. What defines awesomeness to you? Being yourself and doing what you love most no matter what everybody else’s opinion is about it. Being a part of The Mike and Eric Show recently has really helped me to see that as well as inspire me. Not only have I been doing more photo and video but I’ve also laughed a lot more than I probably have my entire life.

2. Have you ever had a near-death experience? If by NDE you mean having my life flash before my eyes then no, but according to my parents I have come close to death. When I was little I had a bad kidney infection that if we had gone a little longer without having gone to the doctor I wouldn’t be here now answering these questions. Unless you’ve figured out how to channel my ghost through a computer =P

3. If you could be absolute ruler of the world for a day, what’s the first thing you’d do? I would buy the rights to Power Rangers and start doing the show the right way again, nothing like what Disney’s done to it. My version would definitely not be TV14.

4. What’s your guilty pleasure? It would probably be getting tattooed. I always think, “Ok this might be my last” but it never is. I already have 10 and I know that that number is going to continue to go up. They all say a little about me though. I try not to just get something because it looks nice.

5. What do you know now that you wish you knew as a teen/kid? I wish I would’ve known how fragile the mind and our memories are as well as my love for photography. My grandma has Alzheimer’s and I wish that I would’ve spent twice as much time with her and taken a lot more pictures than what I did. She always encouraged me and is a major reason I am who I am today. It would’ve been nice to have been able to invite her to a gallery opening or at least be able to tell her about it.
