when the world comes together, there’s nothing better.
there is so much HATE. JUDGMENT. BIGOTRY. INTOLERANCE. HYPOCRISY.
isn’t it such a goddamn BREATH OF FRESH AIR, isn’t it so absolutely beautiful and inspiring and SOUL-STIRRINGLY JOYOUS to see people coming together, in 2010, to STEP UP and help each other? to go out of their way to make a difference in the lives of total strangers?
there are two amazing, intelligent, and heartfelt movements for LGBT rights gaining ground right now and doing exactly this:
FCKH8: their tagline is ‘straight talk on gay marriage’ and their promo video is AMAZING. just sheer head explody goodness (see below!). it’s just totally what a video for a cause like this (fighting proposition 8) should be: sassy and clever, yet to the point. i LOVE that they purposely push buttons and say FUCK throughout the entire video! absolutely love it.
THEIR AIM: “$5.00 from each T-shirt [sold on the website] goes directly to support the great work of the following groups leading the fight against Prop 8 and working for marriage equality across the U.S.: American Foundation for Equal Rights, Equality California, Courage Campaign, Lambda Legal.”
IT GETS BETTER PROJECT: this project has a different tone but runs right along with the underlying message of love and equality for all. it was launched last month by dan savage (yes, of village voice “savage love” fame) in response to the recent tragic deaths of LGBT youth due to bullying and hatred. anyone can upload their video message of hope for these kids, a message that IT GETS BETTER, and you can watch them all on the site. you can also get help from the trevor project if you need it, which operates the only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention lifeline for LGBT and questioning youth.
THEIR AIM: “ItGetsBetterProject.com is a place where young people who are gay, lesbian, bi, or trans can see with their own eyes how love and happiness can be a reality in their future. It’s a place where LGBT adults can share the stories of their lives, and straight allies can add their names in solidarity and help spread our message of hope.”
i’ve seen so many different kinds of people posting their unique video messages to this project – celebs, teens, adults, musicians, actors, council members. even a bishop. even buck angel. yes, buck angel.
and it’s beautiful.
here’s one from john quale aka america’s got talent finalist prince poppycock! whom i love.
“Life isn’t gray. Life is a rainbow. And a rainbow wouldn’t be a rainbow if it were missing a single color. And life just wouldn’t be the magical miracle that it is if it were missing a single one of you unique individuals.”

GAY RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS,
